As you decide what companies you work with and trust your customers to protect, I hope you make them answer three very simple questions:
1. Is the company still going to be here next year?
2. Can the company actually pay claims when it matters?
3. Has the company been around long enough to actually know what it is doing?
That’s it. That is the whole game. Everything else, marketing slogans, clever logos, innovative underwriting platforms, it’s all just window dressing.
Let us talk about the first question and longevity.
Florida is not a market for the faint of heart. It is not even a market for the moderately brave. This is a place where hurricanes do not politely knock…they kick the door in. Litigation trends swing like a pendulum, and regulatory environments change faster than your streaming subscriptions.
And yet somehow every year, we meet a brand-new insurance company that says:
“This time, we’ve cracked the code.”
You have seen them. They show up with a slick website, a catchy name, and a growth plan that looks suspiciously like “write a lot of policies really fast”
And for a moment, just a moment, it looks exciting. Rates are low, appetite is wide, and everyone is happy. Until they discover what it is really like to be a carrier in Florida.
And then we start hearing phrases like:
- “Strategic withdrawal from certain counties”
- “Temporary pause on new business”
- “Seeking additional capital partners”
Some of these companies last five years. Some last two. Some barely make it through their first named storm.
At Olympus, we do not believe in “visiting” Florida. We believe in “operating” here --
for the long term. In fact, next year is our 20th anniversary…making us one of the longest running Florida domiciled homeowners insurance companies.
So, I encourage you to ask hard questions. Demand commitment. Demand financial strength. Demand experience. Your customers deserve carriers that are built to withstand the challenges of Florida, not simply participate in the market while conditions are favorable. I will focus on the other two important questions in future issues.
As always, thank you for your continued partnership and for the trust you place in Olympus Insurance. We encourage you to send your input to info@oigfl.com and help us ensure we deliver meaningful content that supports your success.
